This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. It covers members, who enroll through a participating church and receive text messages, and church users, who are staff members using the Upheld dashboard.
We do not read your email, your other text messages, your contacts, your location, or anything else on your phone. We do not buy information about you. We do not sell or rent your information to anyone. We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not allow targeted advertising.
To write and send the messages you signed up for, to remember what you have told us so later messages make sense, to connect you with someone at your church when you ask, to respond when a message suggests you may be in danger, and to keep the service secure and working.
Your church's staff cannot see what you write unless you ask for a pastor, or unless you gave permission during signup for us to share when something is hard. If you tell us you are in danger, we will contact a person at your church whatever your other settings say, because your safety comes first.
Staff at Upheld LLC can access member content only as needed to operate, support, and secure the service, and that access is logged.
We use a small number of companies to run Upheld: a text messaging provider to send and receive messages, a technology provider that helps generate the messages you receive, a hosting provider, and an email provider for church staff notifications. They are bound by contract to use your information only to provide these services. A current list is available at [support email] on request.
You may also email [support email] to access, correct, or delete your information, or to limit how we use sensitive information. You will not be treated differently for exercising these rights.
Message content is kept for 24 months and then deleted, unless it is part of an open care or safety record. Records of your consent to receive messages are kept longer because the law requires it, without the content of your messages. If you text DELETE, we remove your content and keep only what law requires.
Information is encrypted in transit and at rest. Phone numbers and message content receive additional encryption. Access is limited by role, requires two factor authentication for staff who can see care requests, and is logged.
Your messages are not protected by clergy privilege. If we receive a subpoena or other legal demand, we may be required to provide information. We will tell you unless the law prevents us.
Upheld is for adults 18 and older. We do not knowingly enroll anyone under 18.
If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we will tell enrolled members by text before the change takes effect.

These terms apply to members who receive Upheld messages and to churches that subscribe.
Upheld sends text messages of Scripture, prayer, and check ins to members of participating churches. Messages are written automatically, not by a person. Upheld is not a counselor, a therapist, a medical provider, or a crisis line, and no one reads messages as they arrive.
Pastoral care is provided by your church, not by Upheld. When a member asks for a pastor, or when a message suggests danger, Upheld notifies the people the church has designated. Upheld cannot guarantee that a church responds, and it is not a substitute for emergency services.
By texting a church keyword and replying YES, you agree to receive text messages from Upheld on behalf of your church. Message frequency varies and is typically one to four messages per week. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP at any time to stop messages, or tell us in your own words and we will stop. Reply HELP for help, or contact [support email] or [support phone]. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
If you are in danger or thinking of harming yourself, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Do not rely on Upheld in an emergency.
You must be 18 or older. Use a phone number you control. Do not use Upheld to harass anyone or to send unlawful content.
Churches are billed by attendance tier as described on our pricing page. Monthly plans may be cancelled with 30 days notice. Annual plans are billed once for the year. Churches are responsible for designating and training care contacts and for responding to their members.
Individual plans renew automatically until cancelled. You will be told the price and renewal period before you subscribe, and reminded before each renewal. You may cancel at any time by emailing [support email], and cancellation is as easy as signing up.
Scripture is quoted from licensed or public domain translations. Churches keep ownership of any sermon material they provide and grant us permission to use it to shape messages to their own members.

Some of what members share with Upheld may be considered health related, such as mentioning a diagnosis, a surgery, a caregiving season, or a hard stretch emotionally. This notice explains how we treat that information, and supplements our Privacy Policy.
Only what you choose to tell us in your own text messages. We do not collect health records, connect to any medical provider, or receive information about you from anyone else.
To write the messages you receive, to remember what you are carrying so we can follow up, and to connect you with someone at your church when you ask or when your safety is at risk.
Your church's staff see what you share only when you ask for a pastor, when you gave permission at signup, or when your safety is at risk. Our service providers process messages only to deliver the service. We never sell health related information and we never share it for advertising.
You may ask what we have, correct it, or delete it. Text DELETE to erase what you have shared, or write to [support email]. You may withdraw permission for sharing at any time by texting PRIVATE.

Upheld is not a crisis line and is not monitored by a person in real time. If you are in danger or thinking of harming yourself, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, text HOME to 741741, or call 911.
Every message a member sends is screened before any reply is written, using a process developed with a licensed clinician. The screening is deliberately cautious, which means it sometimes raises a concern that turns out to be fine. We would rather check in unnecessarily than miss someone.
Scheduled messages stop immediately. The member receives a message written and reviewed by a licensed clinician, not generated automatically, that acknowledges what they shared and provides crisis resources: 988, the Crisis Text Line, the National Domestic Violence Hotline where relevant, and 911 for immediate danger. Upheld never assesses risk, never offers counseling, and never asks screening questions.
Upheld calls and texts the member's designated church care contact immediately, and keeps escalating to the other contacts the church has named until someone acknowledges. If no one does, the member receives a further message repeating 988 and 911, and the church's senior pastor is notified. Every step is recorded with the time it happened.
The member's regular messages stay paused until a pastor at their church resumes them, and only after speaking with the member.
Safety is the one situation where we contact a church whatever a member's other privacy settings say. Members are told this plainly when they enroll. In situations involving domestic violence, we never notify anyone in the member's household and we stop sending messages until the member contacts us first.
Our crisis messages and this protocol are reviewed by a licensed clinician at least once a year, and flagged messages are reviewed by a person each week.
